LaRaviere on WLS’ “Connected to Chicago”

This past Sunday WLS aired a conversation I had with longtime Chicago political journalist Bill Cameron on his show, “Connected to Chicago.”

Audio of the Interview is below.

Some excerpts:

Cameron: Are you for an elected school board?
LaRaviere: I am for a representative school board, and just because it’s elected doesn’t mean it’s going to be representative.  If you can buy the Mayor’s Office you can buy a school board election.  So I think you have to put controls in to ensure the school board will be representative.  For example, having more members on the board and then having those members being tied to specific geographic areas of the city would be a way to increase the likelihood that the board will be representative.

Cameron: Can Rahm be re-elected?
LaRaviere: I don’t think Rahm could be elected dog-catcher; and I think he knows it.  And I think the financial institutions that back him know it. So they have to ensure they get behind a candidate who will continue their agenda to be parasites that suck each an every tax dollar they can out of the city coffers and out of the school board coffers and into their bottom line.  They’re going to get behind a candidate who will allow them to continue that practice. You called me a “Rahm critic” but I’m a critic of bad education policy and bad fiscal management no matter who engages in it.  Rahm right now is a face of a much larger beast that is behind him.  So we have to begin to identify the names behind that beast.  So when we see a candidate who has Goldman Sachs, Northern Trust, or Bank of America behind him we know that person is not for us.  When we see a candidate who has the real estate developers who were behind Daley and then switched to Emanuel–whomever they switch to next, we have to have a sense that this is not the person for us. [That person is] going to continue to cater to the needs of those campaign donors while ignoring the needs of Chicago’s residents.

  1. Good interview. I’m a product of CPS. 9 years at Lincoln Elementary (615 W. Kemper Pl. in Chicago) and 4 years at Lane Tech. Go Troy, Chicago children need principals like you. I was lucky to have educated and artistic parents who stoked my interests in non-conventional subjects, and now I’m a professional musician. I had some outstanding teachers at Lincoln and Lane who reinforced the love of learning that my parents introduced. I hope Troy continues to fight for Chicago’s children.
