Don’t Call It Activism

I’m currently working on several different projects–and leading a school–so it’s been awhile since I’ve posted (but there’s quite a bit in the pipeline).  A couple weeks ago, I received a phone call from the South Side Weekly.  The article at the link below is an edited transcription of that conversation. There was one section in which some critical information was unintentionally left out, so I added that information in the comments section following the article.

Here’s the link: http://southsideweekly.com/dont-call-it-activism/

  1. Who is the author of the Getting Straight As book? What reading level would you say the book was? I have two sons & would like them to read it. I think the oldest read Malcolm X but I think I will have him read it again & my younger son! Thanks, Troy for speaking up for all of Chicago’s public school children!

    1. I looked up the book a few years ago and could not find it. There are similar titles out there but they’re not the same. I do not remember the author. The book was basically filled with basic habits, like never miss a class, sit in the front of the class, note-taking tips. I remember one tip was “Re-Write your class notes before the class meets again.” I followed that one religiously. Sometimes I’d rewrite them by hand, and then type them into a word doc–basically rewriting them twice.
